The people behind the work

The Safari Collective is deliberately small. Not because we can't scale, but because we believe that the best creative and strategic work comes from a tight team of exceptional people who care deeply about what they do — rather than a large agency where your account gets handed to a junior team.

At our core, we are two people: Sharon and Luke. Between them, they bring together four decades of industry knowledge and editorial authority, and the technical expertise to build and manage world-class digital platforms. For projects that require additional specialist capability — in performance marketing, analytics, graphic design, or creative production — we draw on a carefully selected network of partners and associates who share our standards and our values.

When you work with The Safari Collective, you always know who is doing your work. And it's always someone who genuinely cares about doing it well.

OUR CORE MEMBERS

Sharon's first experience of Africa was as a child in Nairobi and she has been in love with Africa ever since. Over a career spanning more than four decades, she has been a mainstream journalist (Cambridge Evening News, Fleet Street), a travel writer and editor, a documentary filmmaker (Painted Earth Productions — natural history documentaries sold internationally and on Amazon Prime), a tour operator, a sustainability advocate (Marketing Manager, Fair Trade Tourism and its journalistic voice since inception), and one of the continent's most respected safari and conservation writers.

She has written for Africa Geographic, Travel Africa, Daily Maverick, Prestige, the Mail & Guardian and a wide range of international publications. She has visited more than 200 lodges and camps across sub-Saharan Africa. She won the SANParks Kudu Award for conservation journalism in 2010, and a Siemens Profile Award for scientific writing the same year. She served as Chair of the SATSA Gauteng Chapter.

She founded The Safari Collective because she believed — and still believes — that the safari industry deserves marketing that is as honest, as knowledgeable, and as passionate as the industry itself. Every client benefits directly from everything she has learned and experienced across a remarkable career.

Luke van Wyk is the technical and creative engine behind every website The Safari Collective builds. A certified Duda developer and meticulous designer, he approaches every project from scratch — custom architecture, bespoke layouts, zero stock templates — ensuring that each site is as individual as the brand it represents.

His expertise spans front-end design, back-end development, SEO optimisation, and the ongoing management and maintenance of complex digital platforms. He has an instinctive understanding of user experience — the ability to anticipate how a visitor moves through a site, where they hesitate, and what it takes to convert interest into an enquiry. Combined with a rigorous eye for design detail, this makes him a rare thing in the web development world: someone who builds websites that are both genuinely beautiful and genuinely effective.

Luke works closely with clients throughout the build process and beyond, demystifying the technical side of their digital presence. His commitment to getting it right — quietly, thoroughly, without fuss — is the foundation on which The Safari Collective's digital offering stands.

His work speaks for itself. Which is exactly how he prefers it.

OUR PARTNERS & COLLABORATORS

For projects that go beyond our core offering — large-scale paid media campaigns, specialist graphic design, video production, or advanced analytics — we work with a curated group of partner businesses and independent specialists. All are owner-run. All share our values. All are chosen because they are genuinely excellent at what they do.

We do not outsource to fill gaps. We partner selectively to add genuine value. And we remain your primary point of contact and accountability throughout every engagement.

Wanderlust BDC

We collaborate with Wanderlust BDC — a specialist safari business development and sales representation company with deep roots in the African tourism industry. Where client briefs call for paid social media campaigns and in-depth analytics, we work alongside their digital marketing arm, The Social Safari, to deliver a more complete service. It's a partnership built on shared values and a mutual commitment to the safari brands we serve.
